Sorry if this has been asked before. I didn't see it, but I freely admit to not searching all that hard. Anyway, I'm just curious about whether or not there's any chance that the maximum number of sectors will ever push 20,000? Granted 20k is pretty huge and I'm thankful to have that much, but I do wonder what it would be like to go to, say, 100k or something. Are there underlying programming reasons for why this can't be done or is it just an issue of low interest or? Again I'm just curious.

I don't think there's a huge programming problem with it, although there would need to be a lot more port names added ot the port name file. Overall though, I just don't htink it's a priority.

With that many sectors, 100,000 it may be wise to add in a few more class 9 and 0 ports. Otherwise you are over 90 hops away from buying more figs and shields, etc and only have 50 turns left to get there and you have no twarp drive.
Port names, get creative, have the GameOp add more port names in the TEdit program. Just a suggestion to help you from having to come up with the names. Heck, why not run a contest/survey to have people submit names to be added to the list when/if the 100K sector expansions are finally added in? Write a custom ASP form to gather them, and then have someone review them to make sure they are not cuss words and offensive words, etc. I wonder if NASA has a list of star names somewhere that you can import to the TWGS program data files?

Ohhh gesss... You know, theres TONS of logistic work that needs to go into these kinds of things and your only touching .1% of it with that comment. That kind of change is in the FAR future, so give it a rest...no need to start getting names ready or any thinking on the matter.

Hmm. I believe there was an old post of Rave's way back that said something about the programming feasibility of maybe 60k or something along those lines. Perhaps that's not quite as much of a step up but I still think it'd be interesting. Or maybe something smaller like 40k at least? I think that could still be workable for unlimited games with just one SD. Then again, that's just my take.

how about two opposing corps/megacorps/giant teams each controling their own 20k sector universe which is connected to the other universe in say.. 10-50 places.. invasions will take longer
heh

Wouldn't that be better with say 4 teams with 20k sector universes connected in say 5-10 places with the main 20k universe.[:D]

Oh man, next you will start saying there is a 100K multi-universe of 5 dimensions of 20K sectors each. [:)] I guess you need to buy a "Hollyhop" drive to move between them? [:P]

19,240 = The current number of possible Port Names without repeats.

I myself like the idea of "unlimited" sectors! The Universe just keeps expanding and expanding!
Heh.

just curious, ill point this to team EIS, what is stopping ships from having more than 255 holds, 400k figs, 16k shields, universe 20k, etc.. i understand enough that 8 bits is a byte, with 2 bytes u can get 256 characters, etc.. or something along those lines, but how hard is it to change those values? complete overhaul of the code? is any of this being considered for v4? what exactly is being thought of? can it be shared? these are off the wall questions so i guess they fit with the topic of the post, heh. also, EP, i reiterate, you tha man. heh. ill donate the first name to the new port list for the 40k universe. Port Cha Geez.

Hmmm, that's a better name than I came up with... "Port 19,241" heh. At the max port density setting of 80%, there are enough port names to support a universe size of 24,050 Sectors. I think this is a pointless discussion though, as there is no intent to add or change version 3. I understand EIS' goal to be shoring v3.x up so that they can focus on version 4.

well, if were going to up the holds higher than 255, then we need to have bigger ports. like 5,000,000 or something... then we will need to raise the price of fighters to 50,000 so we dont get 500,000,000,000 figs in 2 days and over run all these servers out there and create one heck of a file (1GB file per game)
hummm... we keep making everything bigger and its like the original, but with bigger numbers... why the need for bigger numbers?
--- see what im getting at? theres only so much you can do before its over kill... there doing good and keeping it at a slow changes...

Yes.. Simple mathmatics really..
It should be able to be bumped up to 32768 or 65536 without any trouble at all (I dont know how many placeholders he uses for storing sectors)2^15 = 20k universe (max 32768).. But you wouldnt have 15, your next logical spot would be 16.. so He probably could bump it to 65k
