Telnet of course.

I tried Synchronet once upon a time but it just had crazy problems. Commands not being accepted, getting stuck in menus, stuff like that. I also couldnt figure out how to get it to work with TWGS on a door.

I tried another one but for the life of me i cant remember the name. It was extremely basic, buggy, and had all of no documentation.

I used to run Maximus on dialup, but its all opensource now, and they just distribute source code. Im not about to try to compile anything on a PC.

Any suggestions?

WWIV 5.0 Alpha/Beta has built in Telnet support. Not sure how you can sign up for a Alpha/Beta test of it. WWIV 4.30 is the latest commercial release but needs a FOSSIL Telnet driver like NetModem or Com/IP to work right. Synchronet reminds me of a WWIV clone. WWIV 4.30 is DOS based, so it is picky about the OS it runs under. You may have to trick it to work with W2K or XP or Windows 2003.

WWIV download and information can be found at:
http://wss.wwiv.com/

WWIV 4.30 can run with GameSrv for free, but I have yet to get online games to work with it. TW2002 expects a modem port in the FOSSIL driver and NetFoss doesn't emulate com ports. http://www.mannsoft.ca/howto-wwiv-gamesrv.html

Download WWIV 4.30 unregistered and you will have only 1 instance, then use GameSrv with it on a different port than your current BBS and try to log into it from another machine and play games. Don't register it unless you can get it to work.

Telnet to skulls.sytes.net Skull and Crossbones and tell the SYSOP there that "Cable" sent you. That is my handle on his BBS. He was very helpful in getting me GameSrv. He runs WWIV 5.0 and it works like a champ.

Also check with http://www.exciter.ws port 23 they have Synchronet BBS with TWGS support. Ask the SYSOPS how they did it. Maybe they can help you.

Good luck!

Well i gave synchronet another shot, but its still driving me insane. It has an extremely large problem in that if your ISP rejects outgoing from synchro's SMTP daemon, the entire thing explodes and crashes. Of course when you restart synchro, it tries to send the email, and blows up again...

I cant afford to pay for any software for this. I also use the machine for other things, so i cant just boot to dos or anything to tease an older system into working.

Ill probly just stick with TWGS. This is driving me insane trying to figure this out.

Well start looking at different software packages, I suggest you start here:
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Bulletin_Boar ... /Software/

Try this one, it is supposed to be free:
http://www.copseystrain.com/omnibbs/

or here:
http://www.elebbs.com/index.elm?category=6

I have not tried these products, so I don't even know if they support doors.

I always liked VBBS & VA. Sadly they are no longer supported by the author. But some other company has picked up the ball and started offering some goodies for it.

I've got a copy of VBBS v7.0 somewhere. It's easy to setup and run, not to mention it's internal scripting allows alot of goodies to be added/changed.

Well im open to anything. I tried syncronet yet again, and its just massively irritating. The default messege editor doesnt even clear the screen before letting you type, so you end up typing over things. I asked about it on their support forum, their answer was "use a different messege editor". I guess im the only one who wonders why they dont just add like 1 line of code to clear the screen on the default editor...

Anyway, they added IRC chat serving which is a big plus for me, but it doesnt work either. Javascript code error.

And i still cant figure out how to make it communicate with tradewars. So im tired of this piece of crap. Which is a shame because the rest of the system is pretty well-designed.

For TWGS: Use rlogin with sbbs.
For 16-bit TW2002/Gold: They have a setup page there. It isn't that hard to set up. BarneySplat causes more problems in it's setup than TW. ;)

WWIV 5.0 beta has just been released:
http://wss.wwiv.com/wwiv50/

Uses a Telnet server now. Should be easier than Synchronet. Not sure if it supports RLogin, as I haven't played with it yet.
