Blade,

That I know of, there is no guide or website. That has anything for the sysop to configure TWGS/TW2002. There is only the documents that come with the installation. And they are the original ones from way back in version 2.xx of TW2002.

All I can say is hopefully. One of the other sysops/gameops that knowns this very well. Will respond to your question. As I personally don't know it that will.

p.s. I am surprised that the new moderator. For all of the support forums. Has not responded to your post, yet. As he is supposed to be the "know all" (expert) on TWGS/TW2002. As a sysop/gameop and as a player.

Quite frankly, I'm not sure. I am far from a "know all" export. I was hoping someone with more experience in ssetting up Gold Aliens would respond with help. I guess it depends on what he means by optimum level. For the most part the settings are just a matter of personal preference. My personal preference in a game is "off" but I doubt that's all that helpful :P

There is no "know all expert" of Trade Wars, even the owner and main programmer has areas of the game that he doesn't know at an expert level, for instance game play. Through out the history of Trade Wars there has been a sharing of knowledge on all levels, and in these forums particularly.

Not that it matters but Harley wasn't billed as the "the "know all" (expert) on TWGS/TW2002." It was stated that "Harley is a very knowledgeable and skilled player in all aspects of playing and configuring Trade Wars 2002 and TWGS and offers a great deal of experience and expertise in these areas." And he is.

The moderators and team members are not chosen on just their knowledge alone, although I am very confident in Harley's expertise concerning TW, other factors are involved as well for instance My knowing the person enough to feel secure with them and trust them with the responsibilities and private materials that come along with being on teamEIS. This by no means indicates that there may not be other people that have valuable knowledge in other areas to share, but then again the entire point of these forums is to offer a way of sharing accumulated knowledge amongst the community members, it was never meant to be a place for people to come and speak to the great Oz of Trade Wars. The idea is to come here for knowledge, answers to questions that someone surely must have asks in the past, to pass on knowledge that you have learnt through experience, to share ideas, to promote the game or sometimes just to vent a little steam in the form of some trash talk.

For instance a simple search of the forums looking for the keywords "Gold Alien" and using the exact match feature points you to over 250 main posts (with many more replies) to peruse to find information on this subject from fellow members of the community that want to share their experience with new players and SysOps/GameOps. This subject is not unique as just about every subject has been covered at some point in the history of this forum. This Forum has been blessed with quite a few very knowledgeable and helpful people, like yourself, and is the sole reason that it is as successful and useful as it is. These forums span the entire life of the game as we know it and there are quite a few "old schoolers" here that can even post knowledge and insight to the "nostalgic" incarnations of the game.

Harley's job is not to be a "know all" answer wizard on every subject concerning TW, it is to be a guide and if he doesn't have the answer to question or it hasn't been answered before to help test or find the answer by other means. If he or I or even you had all the answers we wouldn't need forums, we could just have someone answer all the questions by email or whatever... wouldn't that be nice?

If this post seems like I am defending Harley's ability to help people, I don't have to, his 2 years of helping people here and everywhere else that they ask him defends itself. I am simply letting you know that while he may not be the know all Trade Wars expert, he was definitely the best qualified person for the Lead Technical Support position and I am absolutely thrilled to have his expertise, insight and character as apart of the team.

I do know that you can have as many as 1000 aliens TOTAL, thats all races in a game at a time. You can also have as few as 1 or turn them off all togeather. I run a game with 300 aliens, 300 ferrengi, and 1 Overlord. I have found that there are a lot of aliens out there and this is more than enough even tho its way under the max of 1000 per game. Hope this helps.

I'm with Harley on this one. Without knowing what he means by "optimal", it's hard to answer. It's been a while since I've played with aliens, but back when I was running classicbbs.com, I had quite a few, including the infamous Lawyers, who rode around in Vettes, Lexus's and BMW's. Perhaps some examples of what he means would be handy. Do you mean experience, quanity, alignment, corbo or figs on their ships, or when their ships come out, or when they spawn? There are tons of settings regarding aliens, and you have to spend a lot of time playing around with the editor, and observing them in a game to get them the way you want them.

And there are a lot of us who know a lot about the game. I know A LOT about game play and A LOT about how the game mechanics/settings work, but, like Harley, I won't even pretend to claim I know everything. The more I learn about this game, the more things I discover I don't know. The only nice thing about there being no game update in a while, is that it's given me a chance to catch up a bit. :-) For a while there, I was spending more time trying to figure out the subtle changes between versions than I was on everything else. I think my web-site is finally v.55 compliant now, after only what, a year? lol And I haven't even begun to write my sysop help files yet. That's been on my back burner for two years now. <sigh> Now I'm depressed. :P

I didn't intend on this being a discussion on weather anyone is qualified or not for anything at all.

But for whatever reason it has turned to that, Fine..

My idea of optimal will no doubt differ from everyone elses. So maybe a better understanding in what I am looking for is in order.

I would like to have a better understanding (documentation, previous knowledge,) of the alien server.
again I am certain that your idea of optimum is different than mine. So, is there any information than can be shared ABOUT THIS SUBJECT.

Josh

Per Rick's suggestion(was an extensive post but did eventually get to your question), the best way is to do a search on alien's or whatever your looking for in here, and you will find a ton of stuff on it.
i.e.
quote:250 main posts (with many more replies)

thats going to be your best source of info....

I realize that what opinions and preferences vary between people but this is to give you a little more info to go on. The game I mentioned in the earlier post is a 20k sector game. The aliens are aggressive and fear nothing. They all have their own planets and ship types. So with a total of 601 aliens in the game at any one time this makes the game plenty busy with aliens. You normally cant go more than about 10 sectors without seeing one. I use these settings as a baseline to tailor my games, if I was running a 10k sector game I would cut these settings in half. If I added another full race I would start it with a max of 300 in a 20k sector game. Remember you can only have a max of 1000 aliens TOTAL. Depending on how dominating you want aliens in the game you can go up or down from there. Good luck with it.

Oi!

Nobody has all the answers but I think some of us are well qualified to consider themselves "Experts". Harley, Your doing a great job. Keep up the good work. Traitor, Keep doing what your doing. Your a blessing to many. Gypsy, Bigdaddy. LOL Dunno what to say. Bigdaddy. Shorty, I like seeing your face in here. You've been interesting to read. WABBIT, I've enjoi'd reading you aswell. Your helpfull and interested even when outside of ability. Don't be discouraged, Anyone. [^]

The subject however, ...

Play with it for a while and find what works well on your server. It would be too limiting to say a maximum for anyone but keep in mind the activity processing and system consumption to factor. Everyone is going to find their own in optimization is what works best for *them* .
