Ok, i have seen on a server that runs an unlim game with a 20 sec photon duration. I know that it means that if i were to be p-torped, i would be out for 20 mins. Yes thats a given. However, on outpost-4.net, Thrawn has somehow been able to make it so, if I were carrying photons, and i hit mines or offensive figs, and one of my p-torps goes off onboard my ship, how come I am not out for the 20 mins? Is this SysOp configurable? If so, how? Many ppl are asking me about having this type of photon system as well. So ya know, just some questions.
Later,

Hey, maybe this is just another one of those convenient "bugs" that is not really a bug, afterall. [:D]

Well, I tested on my local server and it appears that this is normal (or at least, a standard bug in the current version). In a non-unlim game, self-photon drains your turns normally, but in an unlim, self-photon does nothing to you at all. Not sure if it always worked this way or if it's a new bug in the latest version(s), as I've never played unlims.

Good catch , I've never tryed photon durations to such an extent to see this error.
If someone else knew about it .. they didnt say it ... Thanks Again.

So the moral of the story is, in an unlim, if you're in a ship that can carry photons, carry 'em. Worst that happens is you're out 40k when one blows up in your hold. Best case, you've got one on you if an opportunity arises.

Xen, do you still have that edit setup? Can you check to see what the threshold for the error is? I thinking it's maybe >= 10?

I tried everything from 1 to 60 second settings (well, in increments, anyway). They worked normally when fired sector-to-sector (ship lockdown for 1 minute per second of duration), but at no setting did they have any effect when self-detonated by running into mines. I didn't try offensive figs or navhaz or anything else; I figure the same self-detonation code is triggered by mines as any other.
I also discovered that changing the setting during a duration will change the currently active duration. e.g. If set to 20 seconds and the wave has 10 seconds left when you change the setting to 60, the wave will now have 50 seconds left. A wave or lockdown will even come back after having dissipated if the setting warrants it. e.g. If set to 20 seconds and the wave ran out 10 seconds ago, it'll return with 30 seconds left if the setting is changed to 60. The data is stored in the files as the time a photon was last fired upon the sector, so anytime current time - last photon time is < photon duration setting, a wave is in effect. (Same with lockdown for an unlim game. If the setting is 5 seconds and you wait 5 minutes then start moving around again, if the setting is then changed to 30 seconds, you're suddenly locked down again for 24 more minutes (or whatever).)

Ohhh, ok sorry, I misunderstood you before. You meant the bug applies to unlimited games without exception.

try retreating from a fig sometime in an unlim game after photoned. Not sure if that ever got fixed, but it used to negate the effects of the photon.

Yup, still does. Still not fixed. So if you have a corpie/ally drop fig in your sector then you relog and retreat, you're free of the photon's effects.
How did some of these bugs get found in the first place?

bugs get found by smart players playing all the time and noticing things, just like people that use word everyday will find things bout it ;-{)

Well, noticing things is one thing. But some bugs practically involve jumping up and down on one foot while patting your head, rubbing your tummy, and docking at a port with an 8-letter name on an even-numbered day of the month. How stuff like *that* ever gets figured out, I'll never know.
