you still need to configure port forwarding on your router.
What type of router do you have?

also if you want to use port 23 you need to get in the Administrative tools, go to the telnet server, and shut it down and set it to manual, or just disable it, then the TWGS will run port 23 with no problems too.

You can get to the Admin tools through the control panel.

K So i got my dynamic DNS with them that so how do I put that up because when i type "telnet: My DNS name:23" it won't connect still

Setup your dns name so it points to your IP. From there you need to test it...

start -> run

Bring up the run prompt and type in:
telnet yourname.whatever.com 2002

And it'll load telnet and take you there. If that works, then you're good.

when picking a port to run your twgs - if you don't want to use port 23, 2002 turns out to be commonly used by some cisco software. here is a good resource for picking a relatively unused port. i use 5023, but i think i'm alone in that choice.

ok so here is where I am... TWGS won't start the sever if I have it configuerd for port 23 and change my settings to manual also it won't start the sever if i have the Ip set to name and then enter my dns dynamic name correctly My Ip is still the same as when I set up my Dynamic dns but instead of using my ip it used the defalt ip for my router which is 192.168.1.1 I tried to set up a static Ip but when I tried to get my dns from my internet provider it didn't work i had to change it back to automtic although when I use http://www.navhaz.com/who_am_i.php  to find my IP it gives me a different number than when i go ipconfig /all when i try to enter that ip in it will not start the sever as well. but when i set the port to 2002 and us my ip my computer can conect to the sever through run and the internet but no ones else can connect that way.
... lol man that was alot sorry for asking like a million questions I am just a little lost on what i need to do. one thing i should note my computer will not open up other tradewars severs either such as ICE9 it just shows the window and the closes could there be a problem with my port23 or somthing?
"you still need to configure port forwarding on your router.

I have a linksys WRK54G I went into the settings under gaming and added telnet port 2002 so i think that i have the port forwarding now.

p.s thanks again for the help I would be completely lost without it

The reason it gives you a different IP address is because of your router.

The IP address you get from navhaz is your external IP.
That's the one that the dyndns would have to resolve to.
The one for ipconfig is your internal IP address that your router assigns to you.

This allows you to have multiple computers accessing the internet from one IP.

If you put port 2002 in your router for port forwarding, you need to make sure it is pointing to your PC's IP address. (the one under ipconfig). Then you should be able to have them try to access it using the external IP (the one from navhaz).

Does that make any sense?

External IP=>Router=>Internal IP.

We run two TWGS off our network LAN here, and this is my setup for our TWGS:

1. In the TWGS click Configure. There will be a series of tabs. The first is Server. In the IP address, my address is set to Dotted, and I have the IP of 192.168.x.x, where X is my internal IP assigned to the machine running the TWGS. In our case I have two machines and two IP's.

2. The game port is the port number you want to use for connections. Be sure that this port also matches the one you set up in the router for port forwarding. You can't use ports already in use, such as port 80 (web), port 110 (mail), etc.

3. The protocol is telnet.

Then in my router config, I set my port forwarding up for both our TWGS. The first TWGS is port 2002, the second TWGS is 2102. So I have a rule to forward port 2002 to the IP of the machine running that TWGS, and a rule forwarding port 2102 to the second TWGS. You have to specify the internal IP to forward to if you are behind a router.

Recognize by going to Nav Haz's Who Am I, the IP it gives is your External IP, whereas running ipconfig /all gives you the Internal IP of your machine. You need to know Internal is for LAN (behind the router), and External is WAN (outside the router).

Following these steps and those of my counterparts should get you on track. If you can't get out to other TWGS machines on the net, there are any number of possibilities, but the common ones are:

1. Is your router allowing port 23?
2. Is the TWGS you are trying to connect to use port 23 or a different one?

Hopefully this will assist you, or others, in getting your TWGS setup and online. Keep asking questions if you still have issues, and I am certain one or all of us can be of assistance.

Welcome to the TradeWars Community.

well I finally understand the port forwarding and the external and internal IP but it will still not work on my computer... so far the only way i have been able to telnet it is to have TWGS set to port 2002 and telnet from the host computer i have the port fowarding set up for 2002 and the aplication is set as telnet. I don't see a spot to check if my router is alowing port 23 but i do know that on the host computer when i go to
Start->Control panel->Admin tools-> services my telnet was not started so i started it set it to manual then set TWGS to port 23 and tried to start it up and it gave me an error message -Error binding player listener (1004- so i changed it back to port 2002 but as far as i can tell starting the telnet service did nothing when ever i try to telnet another sever on port 23 it won't work i haven't found one on port 2002 so i haven't been able to try
I tried to telnet my external ip and it still didnot work could there be a problem with my router? some setting that i haven't changed?

Did you make sure that the IP address listed in your game/application section of the router is set to the IP address of the PC hosting your server?

For example- on mine the IP addy is 192.168.0.101.
So for my port forwarding I have everything coming from port 2002 going to 192.168.0.101. I also have it set to TCP, which is the default.

Is that how yours is set up?

I hope I can answer this one better:

Okay for the part of the TWGS if you want the TWGS to run on port 23, you have to go to the Telnet server, and shut it down, put it on manual, then either disable it or leave it manual, this will let the TWGS use port 23, then the TWGS shouldn't give you the error when you use port 23.

as far as your linksys wireless router, I had the same one, and its port forwarding wouldn't work for my puter either, I use a netgear router now, and the port forwarding on it works like it is supposed to. Your router may be the problem on the port forwarding, do you have a cable connection by chance, or dsl if cable what company.
That will help simplify things too.

I go through charter and use Cable and yes the IP on port forwarding is my internal on my computer and its the IP that TWGS uses as automatic but its not the self binding 120.0.0.1 I guess i could just take my internet connection straight to the computer and have some one just try and telnet my internal IP to see if it is my router I have set up. but that still would not answer the question of why my computer can't connect to any other TWs severs using port 23. I used SWATH before and everything ran on it perfect but now that the 30 days are over I have to either pay or figure out why i can't telnet without it.

What OS are you running? If it's XP, do you enable the Windows firewall? If you are running XP and the firewall is enabled, it would block the port.

Try turning off the firewall and see if that helps. I know when I ran it here I too could not connect.
