I think the limitations have something to do with balance and the formulas used in the game. Just a hunch, not sure if I am right on that.
Have over 255 holds, and you run through ports really quick. Blues can PPT in fewer turns, reds can steal a lot of stuff, etc. Ptrading would take less turns. Colonizing would grab more collies and take less turns. Etc. See the balance in the game is upset a bit there?
Have more than 400K figs and anyone could blow up the Star Dock possibly. Planet invasions would be easier and require less lock and load trips for more figs and shields.
Just a theory of mine, not sure if it is correct.

just curious, ill point this to team EIS, what is stopping ships from having more than 255 holds, 400k figs, 16k shields, universe 20k, etc.. i understand enough that 8 bits is a byte, with 2 bytes u can get 256 characters, etc.. or something along those lines, but how hard is it to change those values? complete overhaul of the code? is any of this being considered for v4? what exactly is being thought of? can it be shared? these are off the wall questions so i guess they fit with the topic of the post, heh. also, EP, i reiterate, you tha man. heh. ill donate the first name to the new port list for the 40k universe. Port Cha Geez.

ill just point out i just asked what was causing the top off of the #'s not that i wanted 255+ holds etc. i agree, unless you increase everything by the same multiple, it would offset game, and if you increase everything the same, its pointless. the only thing i could think of that they could change would be max sectors without affecting gameplay too much.

I agree with Slim, I would like to see the ability to take all current settings as they are with the exception of making a max universe size of something like 50-60k. If you think about it, with the scripts and abilities of players today, if all else remained the same, a larger universe I think would create a more balanced playing field more on par with the technology the players have available to them.

Glad to see I'm not the only person that likes the idea of a bigger universe. [:)] I actually do like the rest of it just the way it is and I'm in agreement about how things could get unbalanced if holds or figs end up wither higher capacities than their current maximums. A larger universe would definitely be interesting and maybe a bit more realistic too. It'd be neat if you could have several alien races that you might not even encounter for a while because they were so far away from your operation. [;)]

Oh man, next you will start saying there is a 100K multi-universe of 5 dimensions of 20K sectors each. [:)] I guess you need to buy a "Hollyhop" drive to move between them? [:P]
Actually I had a discussion on this topic with some other players late one night -- granted altered states of mind can cause this type of thought process. But we were talking something similar to galaxy hopping in a universe where the galaxies had 10k sectors with their own set of ships that could be bought at the SD in that galaxy, but used in the other galaxies - planet types would be different for each galaxy. Galaxy warping ships would require a certain amount of experience and serious cash to obtain. Warp zones to galaxies would have been patrolled by aliens with major attitudes so getting through would not have been a given - no twarping, just moving through the warp zone sectors. Galaxy alien types would also be different - some would be relatively weak while others might just take you out.
I think that is about it, but it was sometime back, and I may not remember it correctly - Jack and Coke that night, hence the altered state of mind at the time. The concept had a lot of issues to say the least and I would not want to be the programmer to write the code.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you see larger universes in the future, I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a lot of interesting changes coming, just keep those ideas coming. I know it may seem like sometimes no one is listening but trust me someone is.

Encouraging words, and a bit surprising to me. But I'm glad to hear them.
Thanks,
