I will soon be running a new legit Gold board and I was wondering what the recommended operating system and setup was to avoid crashes and the like.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'de say XP works ok for me ..
But seriosly .. max out ram on server .. for best proformance
a fast HD ..
and another machine for you to use.
so the SERVER IS STANDALONE.
And as a side note ..
get as close as you can to the continetal United States ..
for connection SPEED [;)]

I've been wanting to setup BartPE (basically a minimal WinXP environment) and see if TWGS will behave. This would be the ideal platform, but will probably take some work to perfect. Not for the faint of heart. But nearly every CPU cycle and megabyte of RAM would be available to TWGS. I may give it a shot and let you know.

Hi! Hiya Vid! Used to play in games with you back in the day but can't recall if it was Atlantis, Pir8, or Thorny's where we met. Game name was lustvicious. Tried to ICQ ya but got an error. Anyway I was running a TWGS game, (lots of trick ship and planet edits, custom gold aliens etc. lots of fun) on a Win98SE box with 512 mb RAM, excellent cable connection and things were humming right along. A program update (believe it was zonealarm) hosed my computer totally as far as being able to see the net goes. I can't browse or telnet yet I can do pings and tracert from a dos prompt, go figure. Tried just re-installing SE over the current installation, no dice, so am looking at having to fdisk and re-install everything. I didn't know if twgs was XP (w/ sp2) compatible but from what I am reading here I gather it is? I purchased XP Pro w/sp2 recently but didn't want to install it until I knew for sure it would work. Am I right in assuming I would not be able to import the game I had running using the SE OS? I even thought about installing XP, then Virtual PC, then SE from the vpc environment and running twgs from there..anyone have experience with doing that? Really didn't want to have to rebang but it's starting to look like I may have no choice. Are any of the helper programs compatible with XP? Any advice is welcome! If I have to re-bang I could use some help with the config for evils as I have always played blue and don't know what tweaks make it an enjoyable game for evils. Seemed no matter what I changed in the game settings it wasn't helpful to evil players <shrug>.

All the programs I use are XP compatible. We're talking about an OS that has been out 3 years. I imagine the game would export/import without a hitch also.
On a side note, you should try to run the LSPFIX utility on your 98 box. http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

You rock, EP!! I swear I googled for days trying to find a fix, or even someone posting the same problem, but turned up nothing. That small application worked a miracle! Am so happy! Thank you so much for the help!

Okay, did some testing with TWGS and BartPE. I was able to make it run on BartPE with no trouble. So imagine running your TWGS on a spare box with an OS as stable as XP, but using 1/10th the resources... meaning more memory and CPU time for TWGS.
Any adventurous SysOps out there?

BartPE always locks up on me... but it might be a fun test.
Wouldn't it be easier to just uninstall most of the services?

I think BartPE would be easier. And so long as you keep your build simple, it should be rock solid. Besides... its <200MB. You could run BartPE and TWGS off of a thumb drive. [:P]

LOL. That'd be fast... *snicker*.
Maybe a ramdrive would be better? =)
